There are two things I really like to do: make lists and watch Veronica Mars. :)  So I'd like to start by compiling a list of future plot threads that are evident in the first episode, especially the upcoming mysteries, as I think that EVERYTHING that's packed into the pilot led to a very tightly constructed, very good first season.

  • The obvious: Lilly Kane's murder.  Who did it?  What was the motive?  Why is Keith Mars still interested in it?  Does he still think that Jake Kane, loving father, was the culprit?
  • "I've got a secret.  A good one."  Lilly, what aren't you telling us?
  • Who raped Veronica?
  • Why is Keith hiding Lianne's return from Veronica?  What is his motive in doing so?
...and so on, though I could gush about characters who aren't important yet but will be, but we'll have to save that for another discussion.

I know I'm missing something.  What would you add to the list?

It's too late for me to think clearly, but I just want to say that I think the absolute GENIUS here involves two things:

(1) They ACTUALLY resolved most of those questions by the end of the first season! The vast majority of shows -- possibly every other show except this one, in fact! -- open up a whole bunch of really exciting threads without ever knowing how to close them, and thus we have totally sucky conclusions that leave us unsatisfied. Not in Veronica Mars.

(2) And yet -- some of those questions were still open. She THOUGHT she'd solved "Who raped Veronica?" but it turned out the most important answer to that question didn't come until S2. Sometimes things aren't as closed as they seem. Which is one of the main points of the show, dontchaknow!

I think one of the show's greatest points was a keen eye for misdirection. It was so difficult to keep a theory on a character for long, because something would come along to compromise your beliefs (Terrence Cook, I feel is a great example). They did a good job of keeping viewers on their toes, but not so much that they'd get frustrated with the constant back and forth.

In regards to the pilot, idk if this is a question, but I think the first Veronica/Weevil/PCH encounter is interesting, because it's like...why would Veronica possibly need these guys' help, or what could they possibly do to help her?

I don't know if this exactly a plot idea, but here's two things I've always thought would be cool to have on the show:
1) A male rival PI for Veronica, her own age.
2) A finale involving fireworks. Can you imagine trying to dodge fireworks while chasing the villian? I used to like the injured!Veronica finales.
